How to Become a Porn Star

Dwayne Powers

You have to just start

Many people believe that to become a porn star, you have to be contacted by a major porn corporation and immediately star in a professional production. Some also believe you have to do things like take part in auditions, take Viagra all the time, and be extremely good at sex. While some of these are partially true, I believe they're all myths that don't necessarily need to be true for someone to become one. I believe that getting involved in the porn industry is not as hard as one may think. Just like with anything else in life, you have to simply just start. Most people who want to start often have trouble because they are afraid of how much their life would change in a bad way. Transforming yourself from a regular person to one who does sexual acts on camera is a huge leap that not many are ready to take. I often get the question of how to start or where I started. My answer is always the same: JUST START. What does that mean? I literally mean start making porn. With today's mobile technology, you can at any point open your phone to the camera, press, record video, and film yourself doing anything sexual. Congratulations, you are now a porn star! Maybe not actually a porn star, but you're definitely participating in adult video. That's an extreme difference from performing in a scene on Brazzers or something, but it is still one of the sure-fire ways to start.

Here's an example pipeline from solo content creator to porn star: upload your solo video to free websites, like xvideos and xhamster, along with social media websites like X/Twitter. Whether you're male or female, and depending upon how much effort you put into the quality of the video, people will want to buy more of it. You can start to sell these videos on clip store websites like Clips4Sale and Manyvids. If you're not able to sell anything at this point, don't fret. That just means solo is not your genre. Here's the part where you have to make a decision to invest in yourself. From here, many performers start to work with other amateur performers. If you are male, you typically have to go the route of hiring female amateurs. And as for females, it's obvious that they would be the ones getting hired by a company or other amateur male performers. Whatever your case is, moving on to non-solo content is the next step.

Where to find co-performers for adult content

The difficulty of finding people to work with in the amateur space depends on your own personal standards. It can be as easy as going to an escort website and offering pay for play on camera. Honestly, there are some companies that have no issue with that; however, I don't believe I could bring myself to do it that way. The next level higher would be to flat out ask anyone that you've been intimate with if they would be interested in something like this. It's a longshot, but you never know who has had the thought of getting into this kind of thing. The most popular way that amateurs locate other performers is through social media. Times have changed from the days of only seeing adult sexual content on VHS and DVDs. Take a scroll through your favorite porn stars' Twitter, Instagram, and even TikTok. You'd be surprised at how many of them have a "Booking" link on their profile. Often times some of them will flat out tweet out a casting call for amateur performers. One thing you definitely should not do, though, is slide into the DMs of an adult content star with the intention of working with them if they did not mention that they are looking for someone to film with. That is a quick way to get blocked by your favorite artist.

There are also websites dedicated to finding work in the porn industry. A quick way to find these sites is just to search for "Find Adult Jobs" or "Jobs in Porn." You'll find companies that are looking for people to work behind the camera and in the office. You'll also find casting calls for both male and female actors. This is a very low-percentage method for finding actual work and performing opportunities, but it's still a place to look. If you're looking to hire talent, it's also a decent place to find people. The final places I'd recommend are porn star agencies. These websites are filled with models and talent that have a company or a person representing them. A word of advice: the agency will expect you to provide a decent work environment. If you go with this option, I would make sure I have a professional setting for the talent to work in before you contact any agency.

The difference between a porn star and a porn performer

I think it's important to think about how you want to classify yourself in the industry. There are some who believe that you have to be on a famous website or movie to be considered a porn star. There are also other people who call me a porn star when I tell them what I do. But I would classify myself as a performer rather than a star. If you think about mainstream movies in Hollywood, you would call Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or Meryl Streep a movie star, but would you call someone who has only been in Tubi movies or home video a star? I guess it's all up to perspective. I've never worked with or for a big mainstream company. Every video or photo I've ever published has been through my own production company. This means I don't know for sure the process of transitioning from amateur to porn star. After working as an amateur company for more than a decade, I've heard stories and have witnessed many stars who have made the jump and can only share what I believe to be true from the outside looking in.

It seems like most female stars are discovered in states like Florida and California, which are the major hubs of porn production. These companies may put out advertisements that the female stars may see at a young age and decide to apply. If you are a relatively thin and young woman that lives in one of these areas and has even a remote interest in joining the industry, most big companies would gladly work with you. There are also other cases where you don't have to be in that demographic and you have other redeeming qualities that pique their interest enough for them to put you in a scene. For these ladies, they don't have to go through the process that I'm laying out in this article, as far as I can tell. For most of them that get recruited in this manner, they often go onto to become a porn star by name in a span of 5 to 10 videos. The same could be said about a very small percentage of male performers who are recruited in this manner. Most professional companies require the applying male performer to be exceptional in many different factors. These include an uncanny ability to keep an erection, even in an undesirable work environment. Usually these talents go on to make a name for themselves and can officially call themselves a star, most times based mostly on how many professional productions they've been a part of.

How I started my porn career

I always knew I wanted to be a part of adult content creation, either in front or behind the camera. There was a point in my life that I decided it was time for me to jump in front of it. I started by doing solo content on live sex webcam sites. Usually, it's mostly women who are successful on sites like these, and that definitely was true in my case as well. I earned an estimated $5 per stream, but making a living on webcams was not the goal. My intention initially was to break the seal of being in front of people while engaging in sexual activity. At the time, the thought of being nude and jerking it online was wild and fun in my mind. The first time I attempted it, there was a crazy rush that I felt and had to go back for more. I recorded my second live stream and posted it to free porn tube websites, merely for the excitement of it. After a few comments from some very nice people, I got the motivation to film more solo masturbation videos, just to post them online. Seeing myself on video in that manner made my imagination picture someone else on top of me in the video.

Long story short, my coworker and I used to have conversations about porn and how his wife "Kim" always wanted to try it. It was supposed to just be a foot fetish video, but while she was naked in front of me, I just had to ask if she was interested in helping me with a video that involved her sitting on top of me while I jacked off. She said it sounds fun and proceeded to mount me while we were both nude. In the middle of the video, she states that I'm just teasing her, so I ask if I can put it in. I was super shocked when she said yes, and it turned into my first hard-core porn video. I created other content before that, but it was just nude and foot fetish photo shoots, with some foot fetish videos sprinkled in between. It's a bit of an unconventional way of getting started in the industry, but I knew the starting point would eventually arrive. From then on, I would go into social media and porn websites to find models who were interested in working with an amateur. Most replies were rejections, but I jumped at every opportunity that presented itself. If you want to see how the Kim video turned out, click here to sign up to my website and watch the full thing.

What would be expected of you as a porn star?

If you create your own content creation space, then you create your own expectations of yourself. However, if you want to be a "porn star" and work for mega mainstream productions, they will definitely have expectations of you. As stated before, I've never worked with any of these companies, but I've heard stories of what they want when you show up on set. Anything I list here is based on conventional straight porn: "sex between male and female." Of course there are many other types of porn/pornography, some of which don't require any of these expectations. I can only speak for what big companies look for in male talent.

Getting an erection is a non-negotiable. If you can't get it up during the filming, more than likely, they will send you home and replace you with someone else. You will not be able to choose your co-star. The production team usually has a talent they want to see you perform with, and that's who you will be working with that day. You will need to be STD tested regularly, with most companies requiring you to be cleared within 14 days of your last test. I can't speak for companies about what they provide financially outside of performance pay. However, I can say that some companies expect you to provide your own transportation, STD testing fees, and meals. I also can only assume that they would want you to be in shape. If you're not able to continue with the scene because you're too tired, I can only imagine that they will not be calling you back for another scene. As far as your ability to cum on command, I think it is different for every studio. I've seen the best studios hire me talent that can't cum while performing the sexual actions in the film. If you pay attention closely, you'll notice that some porn scenes cut away at the end to show a cumshot that is in a completely different position or setting from the final sex position. For example, if they are fucking doggy-style, then before he cums, the camera abruptly cuts to him jerking it at a completely different angle than before. This is usually the production team, pausing the recording so that the male performer can masturbate for a while until he's ready to finish; then they bring the camera to wherever they are to end the scene. So honestly, you could probably get away with not being able to finish the job at the perfect time.

Other ways to perform in porn for a living

You don't have to be a porn star to make a living for yourself in the adult film industry. As stated before, there are companies that are looking for people to do things like social media management, photography, videography, recruiting, etc. Before I decided to step in front of the camera, I did affiliate work. Basically it means I would promote the most popular porn websites, and in return they would pay me half of the revenue for every new customer I sent to them. You can do this now by visiting these platforms and researching their affiliate section. I didn't make much, and it took me a long time to even buy a meal with my earnings, but it's a small idea to start with.
